Eye on the Law
At ALTRES HR we help hundreds of companies cope with the ever-changing landscape of employment law. In fact, we tracked over 150 legislative bills related to employment last year alone.
- FMLA Expanded for Families of Military Personnel - Effective January 2008, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) now permits family members of injured Armed Forces members to take up to 26 workweeks of leave.
- New I-9 Form Issued - All U.S. employers must use the new Form I-9 beginning December 26, 2007, to verify employment eligibility of new hires. Under federal law, employers are required to complete the I-9 for all employees within the first three days of employment or face fines of up to $10,000.
- Identity Theft laws directly affect employers - ID theft legislation took effect Jan. 1, 2007
- Hawaii Smoke-Free Law - Effective November 16, 2006, a comprehensive smoking ban affects all businesses in Hawaii. ALTRES HR provides resources to understand, prepare for, and comply with the new law.
- County Surcharge added to Hawaii GE Tax - On January 1, 2007 the Hawaii General Excise Tax increased by one-half percent.
