It’s Sunday evening and you’re already dreading the thought of showing up to work tomorrow. But maybe it’s not just a case of the Monday blues. Maybe it’s your job that’s getting you down. Everyone has hard days but if showing up to work every day is a challenge, you may need to reevaluate.

Ask yourself these five questions to help you determine if you’re in the wrong job.

Is the work challenging you?

Your job may have started out exciting and filled with opportunities for growth. But three years in, are you still taking on new projects and assignments? Is there a clear path for upward movement? No matter where you are on the career ladder, you should always be striving to reach higher and learn more. If you feel you have accomplished and learned everything you could from this position, it may be time to seek new opportunities.

Are you constantly stressed?

Some people enjoy working in a fast-paced constantly demanding environment, but it’s not for everyone. Majority of people need work-life balance to enjoy their jobs. Continuous work stress can bring on bad health habits like disrupted sleep and abnormal eating which can lead to frequent illness and even long-term problems.

Do you get along with your boss?

Like any relationship, if it’s not working out with your boss, it’s time to move on. The same can be said for difficult coworkers. The average worker spends 2,080 hours per year with their colleagues, so it’s important that you get along. Additionally, when you don’t work well as part of a team, you limit your chances of success both individually and for the company.

Are you underpaid?

Being undervalued in any situation is discouraging. In Hawaii, being underpaid is also impractical. With a median rent over $1,600 per month, most Hawaii workers can’t afford to stay in a position that doesn’t match compensation with skills. You deserve to be paid a fair wage for your work. If you aren’t receiving that now, it’s likely that your paycheck will never reflect the work you do, even if you receive a promotion.

Do you have an interest in something else?

If you’re working as a receptionist but realize that you don’t enjoy interacting with people on a day-to-day basis, then you might be better suited for a different role. Maybe you enjoy other aspects of your job that come more naturally to you like coordinating schedules or organizing files, If that’s the case, consider moving to a back-office role like an administrative assistant or general office clerk.

Your life is too short to spend 40 hours a week at a job you don’t like. If you’re in the wrong job, it’s time to look for a new one.
